Wanderlust: Christchurch - Part II

Even though I pass through Christchurch every year, it’s been a few years since I've worked with someone in the city. As the idea for the Wanderlust book began to take shape, I wanted to finally shoot someone while riding the Christchurch Gondola up to Summit Station.

I created a model search post for Instagram and also searched various hashtags based on New Zealand, Canterbury, or Christchurch models.  While looking through a photographer's feed, I saw a picture of Shāuvy Thoms.  In spite of how awkward I feel sending DM’s, I immediately sent her a message to see if she'd be interested in shooting with me, and she was.

I sent her a message to confirm the details after I arrived in New Zealand, but work caused us to miss the first attempt.  It also created a little chaos because I was supposed to fly to McMurdo Station the next day.  Luckily, my flight was delayed due to technical issues with the plane, so we met at the base station and prepared to shoot.  The ride up was a bit unnerving.  The wind caused the gondola to sway, and they even had to stop it momentarily.  It was easier for me as I focused more on the shots I wanted and only looked through the viewfinder, but Shāuvy had to see everything and was worried that the images wouldn't turn out well.

Once in Summit Station, we sat at a table and I talked her through the images I wanted to create and did a little posing myself.  She understood what I was looking for, and we had a good time creating the following images.
